Student Support

At EGSC, we understand that students learn in different ways.

Personal Touch

At East Georgia State College, you’re not just a face in the crowd—our professors and staff make it a point to get to know you, and there are many great ways to interact and get to know your support team outside of the classroom. From jam sessions on the quad with our talented, musically-inclined professors and staff to competitive sports events where students can pit their skills against our faculty and staff, there's something for everyone. Our professors also are available for assistance outside their classroom hours and will make the effort to make sure you are supported in your journey as a college student!

At EGSC, we understand that students learn in different ways, so we have diverse resources available to ensure all students are academically successful and enjoy a healthy collegiate life.

Learning Commons

The Learning Commons encompasses the library, the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE), the Heritage Center and the Common Grounds Coffee Shop. As the primary academic support hub for students, the library and ACE assist students in transitioning to college; navigating the academic terrain; creating networks of resources; and achieving academic, personal and professional goals. Specific services include library research workshops, tutoring, and advisement, and supporting students in information literacy, biological and physical sciences, economics, mathematics, social sciences, statistics, study strategies and writing.

Library

The EGSC Library, with expansive windows overlooking the quad on the Swainsboro campus, provides students a welcoming atmosphere to gather and collaborate using advanced technological resources, including access to helpful library staff, an expanding physical print collection, electronic databases, computers, printers (including a 3-D printer), scanner, laptops, DVD players, calculators, MakerSpace, study rooms, and a small group presentation room.

Students at EGSC-Statesboro have access to the Henderson Library at Georgia Southern University, while EGSC-Augusta students have access to Reese Library at Augusta University.

Tutoring

The Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) empowers EGSC students to engage in the higher education experience with integrity and pride through use of high-quality academic support resources, such as tutoring services, workshops, and student-centered initiatives to foster critical thinking skills and independent learning. Each of EGSC's three locations is equipped with an Academic Center for Excellence, and students also have access to free 24/7 tutoring with tutor.com.

Advising

Catering to the unique educational goals of each student, Academic Advising is a collaborative process to help all students succeed academically by developing an appropriate educational plan leading to graduation and beyond; providing a focus on life beyond the college; and giving ownership of the process to students.

Heritage Center

The Heritage Center houses a collection of rare materials about the history of the area, the history of Georgia, genealogy and the college archives, including print items, images, manuscripts, maps, artifacts, microforms, and digital and audio-visual materials. Most items are unique, fragile, historical, rare, and/or irreplaceable.

Common Grounds Coffee Shop

Students, faculty and staff enjoy the convenience of having a freshly made cup of coffee or latte, a refreshing smoothie, home-made cookies and grab and go meals. EGSC also partners with Jittery Joes to offer a signature specialty coffee, Bobcat Fuel. This is a great place to hang out!

Counseling Services

Sometimes things get stressful, and it helps to have someone to talk to. EGSC’s licensed counselors are available to help students with personal, academic and career counseling services in a confidential and safe environment.

Personal counseling is a collaborative process between the counselor and the student aimed at focusing on specific goals you have set.  Common goals include reducing anxiety/depression, improving relationships, improving self-esteem and overcoming a traumatic experience. Sessions are generally 50 minutes and can be scheduled weekly, bi-weekly or at other intervals as mutually decided on. Personal counseling is not a “magic wand” and the counselor cannot reach your goals for you, however, we can help guide you in the direction to do so successfully. It is an active process that will take work on your part both in and outside of sessions, and we are willing to help you achieve your goals!

East Georgia State College's LiveWell@EGSC Mental Health and Wellbeing Resource Hub for Students

At EGSC, your wellbeing is our top concern. The University System of Georgia (USG) has launched a comprehensive plan to significantly expand student mental health services at all institutions during the COVID-19 pandemic. The program is funded by an allocation of the Governors Emergency Education Relief (GEER) fund and allows every student to have access to support whenever they need it. Our goal is to make sure you are happy and healthy as you are studying and preparing for your future.

Student services:

  • A 24/7/365 mental health support line;
  • No cost Telehealth and in-person treatment sessions;
  • Virtual Psychiatric Clinics;
  • Personal Student Navigators to assist with referral coordination and support;
  • A Self-directed iCBT (internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy) program designed exclusively for students;
  • The Wellness Hub, which includes an app and an online wellness magazine with educational content, self-help tools and resource links.

The Office of Disabilities Services confidentially helps students who have eligible disabilities secure the appropriate accommodations that may be needed during the student’s college career. Covered disabilities include both visible and invisible disabilities. Some examples include ADD/ADHD, physical/medical disorders, vision/hearing impairments, psychological disorders, and learning disorders. If you have a question regarding eligibility, a licensed counselor is available.

Unsure how to prepare for future job opportunities? Career Services helps EGSC students and alumni with career preparation, exploration and development in partnership with area businesses and organizations. Examples of services include: Cover Letter and Resume Writing, Mock Interviews, Career Counseling, Focus2, CSM (Career Services Management by Symplicity), Job Postings and Job Shadowing/Internships. Students at EGSC-Statesboro and EGSC-Augusta have access to career services and counseling provided by Georgia Southern University and Augusta University.

EGSC’s Military Resource Center provides active duty, reserve service members, veterans and dependents of service members with personalized, convenient services such as advising and mentoring opportunities with faculty and staff. There’s also a place to relax and study in the Center’s lounge area.

Everyone needs personal help at one time or another. At EGSC, we take care of one another. The Bobcat Pantry Program provides students with mentoring, personal care needs and assistance with food. Students can request help through a confidential online request form and typically can receive assistance within a 24-48 business hour period.
